Description

[EARLY PHOTOGRAPHY]. Tintype featuring a group of women standing outside of a Civil War photographer's tent, possibly at Camp Parole, Annapolis, MD.

2 3/4 x 3 1/8 in. outdoor tintype featuring 6 female subjects standing close together right outside of a photographer's tent with large block letters on front reading "Gallery" at top and partly visible "[Ambr]oty[pe]s" to one side. Provenance: An estate in Annapolis, Maryland (modern typewritten label accompanying image).

Modern printed label suggests that this could be the tent of a photographer who has set up for business on the fringes of Camp Parole in Annapolis. The females, possibly a mother and her daughters, could be working to care for POWs received at this prisoner exchange camp or relatives visiting the camp.

Estate of David O'Reilly, Old Bridge, New Jersey

This lot is located in Cincinnati.

Condition
Some small surface scratches/nicks, and what appears to be an intentional scratch with image loss to the direct right of the women. Edges with light discoloration and wear. Case with surface wear throughout.
